Case for Support
Families in our area continue to struggle due to the weak economy and other factors:
-In Austin nearly 20% live below the federal poverty level
-Over 50% of students in the Austin Public Schools are on free or reduced lunch.
-About 25% of Austin Public School District students don’t graduate high school with their peers.
At the Y, we believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. With your support and generosity, we can continue to address these and other pressing issues – and expand our work to reach more people. Our Y serves some 9,000 area residents each year. Its social and economic impact on Austin and Mower County include:
-Improved Quality of Life: The Y improves the quality of life for individuals and the community at large. Programs designed to promote positive youth development, healthy living and social responsibility result in safer and healthier people and neighborhoods.
-Diverse Community: With the population in Austin being one of the most diverse in Minnesota, the Y is committed to reaching out to people of all backgrounds, styles, perspectives, and beliefs. At the YMCA of Austin we practice inclusion by valuing the diversity of all people within our association and the communities we serve, by offering a welcoming space to meet, and by helping to link people and resources within the community. We fulfill our mission by strengthening the inclusion of newcomer populations into the Y and educating young people on cross-cultural understanding and involvement.
-Reaching Their Potential: A highly successful youth and family serving organization the Y offers a wide spectrum of programs to serve our community. By providing licensed preschool, after school care, teen tutoring and academic enrichment through our programs, the Y helps children learn, grow and develop social skills in a safe nurturing environment. Program curriculum includes homework assistance, literacy, arts and crafts projects, art appreciation, outdoor play, and specialty academic activities designed to the specific needs of the children.
The Y is unique. There’s no other nonprofit like it. For nearly 62 years, the YMCA of Austin has impacted lives. In and of the community, we deliver long-lasting personal and social change through programs that keep kids safe and engaged, help people become and stay healthy and support neighbors who have fallen on hard times.
-Over 2,500 of our members receive financial assistance to supplement monthly membership dues, or for programs such as gymnastics, camp, aquatics, afterschool enrichment, YMCA Youth Institute, and martial arts. Over $1 million is given back to the community through direct aid to individuals.
– The research-based standards we have adopted are grounded in evidence-based practices that are known to make a childcare program healthy. To benefit the children who participate in the Y’s early childhood and after-school childcare programs the Y: Designates fruits and vegetables for snack, conducts parent education to encourage healthy behaviors at home, and offers physical activity for children.
The YMCA of Austin is stepping up to meet our community’s challenges and strengthen us for the future. We need your support!
